Bosworth’s 2011 GCSE results exceeded the National average with 92.5% of students gaining A*-C grades with the National average at 69.8% and A*/A grades at 33.8% whilst the National average is set at 23.2%.

In September 2010 we introduced a two year GCSE scholarship for gifted students. Simran Patel and Emma-Jane Faulkner were part of this cohort and at the end of their first year at GCSE; both students sat module exams in English Language, History and Science. Simran achieved two "a*" grades and one "a" grade, Emma-Jane achieved 1 "a*" grade and two "a" grades, a real success for each student at the end of their first year with us.

Adrian Thacker (GCSE Course Director) is extremely happy with this year’s GCSE results, particularly those from the two-year programme:

It is testimony to Emma-Jane and Simran’s hard work last year. In fact, all of the two year GCSE students worked very hard and deserved what they achieved and I am very confident they will go on to achieve equally excellent final grades next Summer."

Both girls will continue this year with a mixture of the following GCSE subjects: Chemistry, English Language & Literature, French, Geography, History, Mathematics and Physics.

Our aim at Bosworth is to offer gifted students a two year GCSE scholarship and then retain this scholarship across another two years for A Level study. By doing this our hope is for the student to achieve the best advice on their future pathway and to gain a place at a top 50 university. With the current competitiveness for university places; both A Level and GCSE results will become increasingly important in the application process.

Bosworth will hold a GCSE scholarship test on the 14th February 2012 if your child is currently in Year 9 and would like to sit the test, please contact us on 01604 235 090.

Pictured here: students: Simran Patel and Emma-Jane Faulkner with Mr Adrian Thacker (GCSE Course Director)

Children in Need 2011

This year students ran various events for the charity "Children in Need". The charity helps to improve the lives of disadvantaged children and young people. The fundraising events this year included: everyone wearing spots or they were fined, selling cupcakes and sweets (which the students and staff made) placing coins on Pudsey bear and the Bush Tucker trials.

The Bush Tucker trials were taken as an idea from a TV programme "I’m a celebrity get me out of Here" set in Australia, it involves celebrities who take part in gruesome trials in the jungle. A collection of our GCSE students came up with 4 trials for our teachers: Mr Tatar, Mr Thacker and Mrs Robbins. Drinking flavoured milkshakes and guessing what they were made up of (ingredients such as spinach and sweet corn were included) picking eggs and cracking them on their heads (some were hard boiled some were raw) eating 4 donuts (whoever was the quickest won) and finally picking stars out of baked beans using only their mouths. It was a very messy but fun event and a big thank you to the teachers for being such good sports and taking part.

In total £750 was raised from Bosworth students for this charity, a very worthwhile donation!

Students volunteer to help CAMRA

Annually at the end of May the Northamptonshire branch of CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) stage a 3 day festival at Delapre Abbey in Northampton. The event attracts thousands of visitors from all over the county to come and sample over 300 beers, perries and ciders and to enjoy a variety of music. It is a really family friendly day out.

Students from Bosworth Independent College have for the past two years volunteered their services to help make this a successful event. CAMRA rely on 100% volunteers to run this event. They are given an insight into how the beer is produced, presented and served as well as the many skills they develop being part of a large and very efficient team.

In appreciation of the students’ contribution to the success of the festival, CAMRA have donated £250 to the Bosworth Student Council.

We asked the students to tell us more about their day:

It was a fantastic atmosphere and a thoroughly enjoyable experience, I would recommend for any student to take part."

- Adam Jones

"It was a really busy day we didn’t stop from the start to the end of our shift and we got a real sense of satisfaction from taking part. Last academic year over 600,000 students from 4,000 schools took part in the UK’s biggest national maths competition.

Twenty-three schools and colleges from the County got through to the Regional Final Day of this competition which took place at the University of Northampton.

The students competed in three rounds:

Group round: to answer 10 questions in 40 minutes. The teams must decide on their own strategy, work in pairs, as a group or individually.

Crossnumber: a mathematical crossword puzzle with one pair from the team solving the across clues and the other pair solving the down clues.

Mini-relay: members of the team have to answer mathematical questions, but the information passed from other members of the team is needed to solve them completely.

Every year there is extremely strong local competition and we are very pleased to have won this regional heat, our worthy opponents Oundle School and Kings School Peterborough came joint second. With over 93% of the grades achieved being in the A* to C range, over 77% being
A or B, and more than 75% of students gaining at least one A grade, it is hardly surprising that the large majority will now be attending their first or insurance choice university.

Equally, in the most competitive universities A* grades are increasingly being used to differentiate between very good and excellent applicants and with 45% of our students gaining at least one A* grade, their chances of attending the very best institutions have been hugely enhanced.

Executive Principal, Mr McQuin, comments;

"With more and more students understanding the importance to their careers and life of attending an outstanding university, we realise that there is hugely increased competition for the most sought after places. It’s for this reason that we are so pleased that the co-operation and work ethic of our students and staff has produced such great results. In particular we are delighted with the fact that from the 89 students who sat their second year exams, 67 achieved at least one A grade and an astonishing 40 of them gained at least one A*."

Our top achieving A Level student Jessica Law gained three A* grades and two A grades, but astonishingly achieved this in one year. She is planning to study Accounting and Finance at Bath University.

A2 students (left to right: Matthew George, John Corcoran, Nilen Patel & Mark Sumner) collecting their results and showing Mr McQuin (Executive Principal).

A Level Results Day Message from the Executive Principal

With over 93% of our A Level grades at A-C and 45% of our students gaining at least one A* grade we are delighted with our 2011 results. Read more

Executive Principal, Mr McQuin, gives his thoughts on this year's A Level results in the above video.

Connect with us on other websites

A few ways for you to keep in touch with us on other websites

<img src="http://www.bosworth-college.co.uk/warehouse/facebook.png" alt="Like us on Facebook" width="18" height="18" border="0" class="bottom-icons" Like us on Facebook

<img src="http://www.bosworth-college.co.uk/warehouse/twitter.png" alt="Bosworth on Twitter" width="18" height="18" border="0" class="bottom-icons" Follow us on Twitter

<img src="http://www.bosworth-college.co.uk/warehouse/flickr.png" alt="Photos on Flickr" width="18" height="18" border="0" class="bottom-icons" Photos on Flickr

<img src="http://www.bosworth-college.co.uk/warehouse/vimeo.png" alt="Videos on Vimeo" width="18" height="18" border="0" class="bottom-icons" Videos on Vimeo

You can also get in touch with us directly through our contact page or by calling <span style="font:12px 'Lucida Grande', LucidaGrande, Verdana, sans-serif; They were given measurements and they had to work out how many sticks were required and how they would piece together.

As they began building the structure they also began to realise they needed to add more strength to the bottom of the geodesic dome it in order to make it more secure. This adaptation allowed the student’s ‘Gherkin’ structure to hold not one large maths book but two! The students expected the structure to hold one book approximate weight 2kg, but they were pleased when it was able to hold two.

A Level Maths teacher Mrs Jane Deery believes:

"Pure maths will be at the heart of any building and it is important for students to recognise the importance of this within any design. To make an unusual structure such as ‘the gherkin’ a geodesic dome the architect has to consider diameters and mathematical formulas involved. Given the generous nature of our students and their willingness to help others we are happy to report that our Japanese students exceeded their target and will be able to show that even though they are so many miles away, they can make a real difference.

Japanese students raising money (left to right): Takayuki Matsuda, Chisato Aoki and Hiroaki Hashimoto

Horsing About

Pictured above top left in the following order: Samuel Got, Gilmore Wellio, Yang Zhou, have taken themselves horse riding on a Sunday morning.

The stables are at Boughton Mill, Chapel Brampton which is situated in the local countryside approximately 3 miles away. This is an organisation made up of 17 independent colleges in the UK, dedicated to pursuing excellence at GCSE and A Level. Every year they hold an Academic Awards Presentation at the House of Lords in London which is hosted by Baroness Perry of Southwark (former Chief Inspector of Schools).

Erika - GCSE Student Award
Erika joined us at Bosworth Independent College in September 2009 to take a one-year intensive GCSE course; she completed this successfully, achieving A* grades in all of her eight GCSE subjects, including full marks in both physics and chemistry. She achieved marks of 180/200 in English literature and 359/360 in French. This latter exam required her to translate from her second language to her fourth – her first language is Japanese but she also speaks fluent Italian! As well as this academic brilliance, Erika has a truly lovely personality - words our teachers have used to describe her include dedicated, modest and popular. Bosworth Independent College is delighted to have been involved in her education and we, like her parents, are truly proud of her achievements. Erika has now progressed onto our two year A Level programme to study: Biology, Chemistry, French & Mathematics.

Erika Kemi with her parents

Frankie - College Prize
We were delighted to be able to award Frankie the Bosworth Independent College prize. He is presently studying for a degree in chemical engineering at the University of Manchester. Frankie achieved five A grades at A level last year, four of which were A* (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths) - the subject that he achieved ‘merely’ an A grade in was his native language, Cantonese! He achieved full marks in 6 units, with an average mark of 92%. Frankie is much more than intelligent – his teachers describe him as being the perfect role model for the younger students and nothing that we, or others, asked of him was ever too much trouble. He is also remembered for his great sense of humour. Although there were very many other highly achieving students at Bosworth last year, the decision to award Frankie the college prize was unanimous.

Frankie Man Tak Pang with Baroness Perry

Table Tennis Champion

Cavan Foo, currently an A2 student at Bosworth. Either age group then have the right to take the appointment alone, as the nurse will always respect a student’s right to confidentiality and privacy.

This service is available for all students both boarders and day students at Bosworth Independent College.

Summer School 2011 at Bosworth

Our Summer School 2011 course information is now online and ready to download. Both GCSE and A Level students have displayed their work alongside their personal sketch books for all to view.

Mrs Barsby (Head of Art) has enjoyed the amount of creativity shown by this year’s candidates with each student showing a real individuality to their work. This is obviously testament to the teaching staff allowing each student to develop their own unique style.

Students throughout the year work on all initial ideas within their sketchbooks. They begin by utilising the more traditional art methods including; observational drawing, water colour, pen and ink, charcoal and pastel. Alongside working on these methods they study artists from all the main art movements.

For unit 1 the set theme was ‘natural forms’ and students begin by looking at shells, landscapes, bones and vegetables in order to develop the traditional techniques.

From the knowledge and understanding that student’s gain during the year they can then decide on which theme they wish to develop for their final piece of work.

From this year’s exhibition we can see students have been influenced by varying artists/movements; Marc Chagall, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Jasper Johns, Pop Art, Roy Litchenstein, Georgia O’Keefe, Salvador Dali, Claude Monet and the Impressionists, Vincent Van Gogh and Pablo Picasso.

Students have produced final art pieces in textiles, film, oils, acrylics, origami and mixed media. This year it has been exciting to witness the development of all the original interpretations and we are extremely proud of the work that has been produced.

More on A Level Art at Bosworth

Students join live international link-up with Tanzanian school

Last October, Bosworth Independent College students had the opportunity to speak live to a student and teacher from a school for the blind in Tanzania. The teacher was an ex student of the school and was also blind.

The school was set up approximately 10 years ago and is a salvation for the blind students who are chosen as before they would have been in classes of over 100 children in a normal school, which obviously limited their ability to learn.

The link up was part of the BBC ‘Hunger to Learn’ series and Bosworth Independent College was chosen because of its international student mix.

Five Bosworth students got the opportunity to take part throughout the day and we were on two channels BBC world and BBC news channel. Students were sat in front of a web cam, watching themselves as well as the student and teacher in Tanzania on the screen.

Through the headset the BBC gallery staff instructed the students how long they had before going live to the link up. Once live, the students on average got to ask about 4 questions each.

The Tanzanian student understood some of our questions and we did manage to find out his favourite football team was Everton! The teacher was able to explain to us in more detail what life is like in Tanzania, what the school day consisted of and why he had chosen to go into teaching.

It was a fascinating insight for Bosworth students to take part in the live link up and to get to understand how little some schools have in the way of facilities. It was a humbling experience for all involved and definitely made the students recognise how lucky they are to receive a good education.

Time Slots
10.30 BBC world – Anastasia Venetska (Ukraine)
10.40 BBC news channel – Radek Freyer (Polish)
11.30 BBC news channel – Chak Sum Leung (Chinese)
14.30 BBC world – Sam Flowers (British)
14.40 BBC news channel – Harpreet Kaur (British)

The BBC news live link-up with Harpreet is available to view on the BBC website.

Why choose to study at Bosworth Independent College?

Here at Bosworth Independent College we pride ourselves on our unique learning experience which is both intense and flexible. This is delivered in a caring and supportive environment that allows students to really reach their potential – possibly achieving more than they ever dreamed.

We house International students from over 20 different countries along with UK pupils who primarily join us as day students.

Which means anyone who joins the College from the UK enters a rich cultural experience, mixing with students from all over the world. This greatly broadens their view of the world and their understanding of International issues.

We also strongly believe students are challenged by their International counterparts particularly in the subjects of maths and science and it opens their eyes to the competitiveness they will face at University level. Pre University, we encourage students to raise their game at GCSE and A Level, ensuring they work consistently hard towards their final exams.

The College has been established for over 33 years and has grown from a small tutorial college into a learning centre for over 300 students. With highly experienced teaching staff and average class sizes of 8 to a class, students are given the support and attention they require to achieve their full potential.

For GCSE we offer either a one or two year programme with 16 subject options on the current curriculum.

The two year GCSE course is aimed at students who are 14 and just joining the GCSE learning level, these students will take 7-10 subjects.

The one year GCSE course is aimed at International students or slightly older UK students who are looking to progress to A Level’s as quickly as possible and they take 5-7 GCSE’s.

For A Level we also offer a one or two year programme with 22 subject options on the two year programme and 7 subject choices for the one year option on the current curriculum.

The one year A Level is aimed at UK students who have already studied to a higher level and they either need to retake or they want to choose a new subject. Or for International students who have already studied to a higher level and have the ability to complete A Levels in one year.

Our aim for our UK students is to teach them from GCSE to A Level (14-18 years) ensuring they reach their full potential to achieve the University of their choice. Nearly all of our students progress to University, but we pride ourselves that last year 59% of our A Level students left to attend one of the top 25 UK Universities.

Our A Level results are outlined in full in the results section.

The appliance of Science

At Bosworth Independent College we appreciate that young people vary in their approach to Science. We firmly believe in offering this flexibility to students as we recognise the importance of tailoring to the needs of the individual at GCSE.

At Bosworth we offer a one year or two year GCSE syllabus for many different science options: general science, biology, chemistry or physics. Last year year we had 11 different nationalities; Brazilian, Chinese, German, Italian, Malaysian, Mongolian, Russian, Spanish, Turkish, Ukrainian and Vietnamese.

As we strive to support the local business community we will always look to source Summer School activities within the County. Students will visit many local tourist attractions; Northampton museum & art gallery, Abington Park museum, Stoke Bruerne (picture of students shown above), Althorp House and Rockingham Castle.

The town centre is also regularly visited during the programme offering a number of activities such as; shopping, Tenpin bowling, Laser Zone & Vue cinema, all ideal for the British weather! On sunnier days, students enjoy team building and orienteering at Brixworth Country Park and cycling around Pitsford Reservoir.

The course director Rachel Tatar explains,

"Our experienced teachers make a real difference to the students written and spoken English over the 6 week programme. By giving students a worthwhile experience at Summer School we encourage them to consider the UK as a future study option either at a School or University."

Furthermore, we believe we are helping to put Northampton firmly on the map by teaching the history and culture of our town.

An Art programme is also on offer to the International students 3 afternoons a week to improve their art portfolio and to learn new skills and techniques. Last year, our students achieved a 100% pass rate at A Level in these subjects, with 73% of students gaining an A grade and a further 18% a B grade.

Therefore, it is fair to say Maths is a core subject at Bosworth, and because of the number of students we have studying this subject at A Level we are able to offer 16 different units out of a possible 18 available.

To incorporate this number of units we actually have 51 different A Level groups with an average of 8 students in each group. Which obviously means timetabling this subject in itself proves a mathematical challenge! However, having 18 maths teachers on hand helps.

The students can choose statistics, mechanics or decision maths to go alongside the compulsory pure maths units and with students from 22 different nationalities opting for maths each Bosworth student has a very unique learning experience.

Furthermore, this year we entered a number of students into the Maths Challenge competition which is set for AS Level students. Of those who participated; eight students achieved gold, thirteen silver and four bronze medals.

Three of our gold medal winners qualified to enter the first round of the Maths Olympiad and one of these students, Minh Trang Nguyen, won a place in round 2 of the Olympiad from which the National team is chosen. This is an exceptional achievement and we are eagerly awaiting her results.

Pat on the back for business

Here at Bosworth Independent College we recognise the time and effort involved in any local business investing in taking a student on work experience. Whilst studying the GCSE programme students are required to go on a two week work placement. Through the Connexions website they are able to search for local companies who take part in the scheme.

One example of a recent placement is Charlotte Brookes (pictured left) a current GCSE student at Bosworth Independent College, she chose to join, John Roan Photography. During her time Charlotte experienced, portrait sittings, show homes and a charity golf event. Charlotte is pictured here in a mock golf magazine front cover which all participants of the day took away as a souvenir. Charlotte found it fascinating to be behind the camera, "I didn’t realise how much work was involved setting up the lights and preparing for the shot to be taken. I now understand the time required for each shot."

The team praised Charlotte for being a pleasure to have around and someone who engaged well with the various projects.

Irfan Bhatti

(pictured right) another GCSE student at Bosworth Independent College, had a two week placement with a major electrical retailer. Irfan spent time ticketing, merchandising and selling products. The store staff described him as a natural salesman who was very industrious. Irfan really enjoyed his experience with this retailer, especially picking up selling tips from the team.

Alan Morton Course Director believes:

"Work experience for students of this age group provides a great insight into the world of work and the students certainly return with increased confidence".

Bosworth Independent College is home to approximately 320 students, 75% of these students are EU or International students that board with the College. For these students along with our UK students the opportunity to work for 2 weeks with a local business proves to be an invaluable experience.

Confirming your return flight

Confirming your return flight

The airlines are now confirming flights to the UK and therefore students who have been unable to travel should now contact their airline and try to secure a seat at the earliest date possible.
