One of the enrichment activities on offer this term is Photographic Club, taught by Mr Fowler.

It has been a popular activity and many students have been enjoying learning the art of photography. Some of the pictures in our Bulletin and this news section of the website have been supplied by the club, so thank you to them for their creativity.

Festive Fun

This year some of the boarding houses threw individual Christmas parties for their residents. Students made Christmas decorations prior to the parties, ate party food and played party games, they also gave presents to each other. Father Christmas also made an appearance but he couldn’t stay for long as this is his busiest time of the year!

Children in Need 2011

Children in Need 2011

This year students ran various events for the charity "Children in Need". The charity helps to improve the lives of disadvantaged children and young people. The fundraising events this year included: everyone wearing spots or they were fined, selling cupcakes and sweets (which the students and staff made) placing coins on Pudsey bear and the Bush Tucker trials.

The Bush Tucker trials were taken as an idea from a TV programme "I’m a celebrity get me out of Here" set in Australia, it involves celebrities who take part in gruesome trials in the jungle. A collection of our GCSE students came up with 4 trials for our teachers: Mr Tatar, Mr Thacker and Mrs Robbins. Drinking flavoured milkshakes and guessing what they were made up of (ingredients such as spinach and sweet corn were included) picking eggs and cracking them on their heads (some were hard boiled some were raw) eating 4 donuts (whoever was the quickest won) and finally picking stars out of baked beans using only their mouths. It was a very messy but fun event and a big thank you to the teachers for being such good sports and taking part.

In total £750 was raised from Bosworth students for this charity, a very worthwhile donation!

Students volunteer to help CAMRA

Annually at the end of May the Northamptonshire branch of CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) stage a 3 day festival at Delapre Abbey in Northampton. The event attracts thousands of visitors from all over the county to come and sample over 300 beers, perries and ciders and to enjoy a variety of music. It is a really family friendly day out.

Students from Bosworth Independent College have for the past two years volunteered their services to help make this a successful event. CAMRA rely on 100% volunteers to run this event. They are given an insight into how the beer is produced, presented and served as well as the many skills they develop being part of a large and very efficient team.

In appreciation of the students’ contribution to the success of the festival, CAMRA have donated £250 to the Bosworth Student Council.

We asked the students to tell us more about their day:

It was a fantastic atmosphere and a thoroughly enjoyable experience, I would recommend for any student to take part."

- Adam Jones

"It was a really busy day we didn’t stop from the start to the end of our shift and we got a real sense of satisfaction from taking part. It was also interesting to learn about real ale and meet local people.’

Winning Formula

Maths - winning formula

We are extremely proud of our Bosworth maths team who recently won the County Regional Final Day of the UKMT National maths competition. Students: Baba Bob-Soile, John Cheng (top row), Chong Liu, Ciel Zhao (bottom row) made up the winning team, pictured here with Head of Maths, Mrs Gill Hills.

Every year the UK Mathematics Trust (UKMT) holds various maths competitions, this one the Senior Team Maths Challenge is aimed at Year 11 -13 students. The UKMT is a registered charity whose aim is to advance the education of children in mathematics. Last academic year over 600,000 students from 4,000 schools took part in the UK’s biggest national maths competition.

Twenty-three schools and colleges from the County got through to the Regional Final Day of this competition which took place at the University of Northampton.

The students competed in three rounds:

Group round: to answer 10 questions in 40 minutes. The teams must decide on their own strategy, work in pairs, as a group or individually.

Crossnumber: a mathematical crossword puzzle with one pair from the team solving the across clues and the other pair solving the down clues.

Mini-relay: members of the team have to answer mathematical questions, but the information passed from other members of the team is needed to solve them completely.

Every year there is extremely strong local competition and we are very pleased to have won this regional heat, our worthy opponents Oundle School and Kings School Peterborough came joint second. We are now through to the National Final which is to be held in London on the 1st February 2012. Good luck team we are all supporting you!

Red Nose Day

Bosworth students showed a great deal of initiative in fully supporting Red Nose Day on Friday 18th March. The theme of the day was to do “something funny for money” as part of the BBC’S Comic Relief charity and events consisted of the wearing of funny clothes (including colourful wigs and monster feet ), a guess the teacher as a baby competition, sending red roses as a message of friendship and a mega red nose cake sale.

As a result over £350 was raised to support a wealth of good causes in this country and Africa. Only £5 raised enough money to provide a mosquito net and prevent a baby dying of malaria. £100 provided a street child with a year of education. We are delighted that our students so enthusiastically dedicated their ideas, time, effort and money to make such a difference to those in need.

Japanese Earthquake and Tsunami Appeal

The world watched in horror as the earthquake and tsunami hit Japan on Friday 11th March. For our Japanese students this devastation was particularly distressing. They are 11,000 kilometres away from home and feel shocked and helpless and naturally want to do something to help the victims of this disaster. To assist these students Bosworth College has launched an appeal to raise £870 to buy a Shelterbox (for more information see www. shelterbox.org) that contains an emergency pack that will be sent to the area of devastation. This Shelterbox can be tracked and students will know where it has gone and who it has helped.

Various fund raising activities took place during the last week of term to include an Easter Egg Challenge and another (chocolate) cake sale as well as donating to collection boxes around the college. Given the generous nature of our students and their willingness to help others we are happy to report that our Japanese students exceeded their target and will be able to show that even though they are so many miles away, they can make a real difference.

Pictured above top left in the following order: Samuel Got, Gilmore Wellio, Yang Zhou, have taken themselves horse riding on a Sunday morning.

The stables are at Boughton Mill, Chapel Brampton which is situated in the local countryside approximately 3 miles away. Students can join the riding school with no previous experience and the lessons are £15 an hour. After only a few lessons, students are able to ride unaided.

We encourage all our students to get involved in local activities and events, with the countryside on our doorstep there are lots of things on offer. It was the first time that both Samuel and Yang attended and they both loved the experience and want to return. This term, Gilmore has been a regular at the Stables and has made fantastic progress. His initiative and focused approach make him the model student.

Bosworth Independent College is a member of an organisation called CIFE (Council for Independent Education). This is an organisation made up of 17 independent colleges in the UK, dedicated to pursuing excellence at GCSE and A Level. Every year they hold an Academic Awards Presentation at the House of Lords in London which is hosted by Baroness Perry of Southwark (former Chief Inspector of Schools).

Erika - GCSE Student Award

Erika joined us at Bosworth Independent College in September 2009 to take a one-year intensive GCSE course; she completed this successfully, achieving A* grades in all of her eight GCSE subjects, including full marks in both physics and chemistry. She achieved marks of 180/200 in English literature and 359/360 in French. This latter exam required her to translate from her second language to her fourth – her first language is Japanese but she also speaks fluent Italian! As well as this academic brilliance, Erika has a truly lovely personality - words our teachers have used to describe her include dedicated, modest and popular. Bosworth Independent College is delighted to have been involved in her education and we, like her parents, are truly proud of her achievements. Erika has now progressed onto our two year A Level programme to study: Biology, Chemistry, French & Mathematics.

Frankie - College Prize

We were delighted to be able to award Frankie the Bosworth Independent College prize. He is presently studying for a degree in chemical engineering at the University of Manchester. Frankie achieved five A grades at A level last year, four of which were A* (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths) - the subject that he achieved ‘merely’ an A grade in was his native language, Cantonese! He achieved full marks in 6 units, with an average mark of 92%. Frankie is much more than intelligent – his teachers describe him as being the perfect role model for the younger students and nothing that we, or others, asked of him was ever too much trouble. He is also remembered for his great sense of humour. Although there were very many other highly achieving students at Bosworth last year, the decision to award Frankie the college prize was unanimous.

Open University Module

Open University Module

Three of our A Level students have successfully completed an Open University distance learning module. Students independently register for these modules for a variety of reasons; personal interest in a topic, to widen and broaden their experience of a subject and to add an extra dimension to their personal statements on their UCAS forms.

For all of them it is a great personal achievement as they have completed a module at the same level of the first year of a University course - proving they have the aptitude for degree study.

Students pictured above are: Adaeze Egwuagu, Viet Tien Nguyen and Matthew George with (Director of Studies) Mr John Bromilow. Each student completed a different module, Adaeze - "start writing fiction", Tien - "Introducing astronomy" and Matthew - "Start listening to music".

Students are given an online tutor who marks their work and offers guidance as they study. Some assessments are essay based, others are questions based which are completed at the end of the module.
Students can either submit work in July or October, and we have 6 more Bosworth students who are currently hoping to submit work in October. They are covering a variety of topics: "human nutrition", "human genetics & health issues", "introduction to book keeping", "molecules, medicines & drugs" and "elements of forensic science".

Mr John Bromilow explains "Each student has to dedicate a considerable amount of time to a module alongside their heavy A Level workload and we are very proud of their achievement. It is teaching them skills in self discipline, self motivation and time management. Also in the current University environment with more competition for every place having an extra string to their bow is important."

Maths Challenge

Maths Challenge

Last November, our Bosworth team: Joshua Ukpaka, Wayne Chan, Anastasia Venetska and Chong Liu took part in the Team Maths Challenge at Northampton University. There were 20 teams in total from schools all over Northamptonshire. Bosworth achieved third place in the competition and all those who took part agreed it was a really fun afternoon and worth attending in the future.

The students took part in three rounds:

Round 1 was answering ten questions in 40 minutes, working as a team.

Round 2 was working in pairs to fill in a crossword using numerical answers. One pair had to work on the across clues, the other pair on the down clues, but without communicating with each other.

Round 3 was a relay competition; one pair answered a question, passed the answer to the other pair to use for their working out and then returned their answer for the next question and so on.

Congratulations to the students involved on achieving third place, pictured above with Mrs Gill Hills (Head of Maths).

Merit Forms

Merit Forms

When students produce work that exceeds teachers expectations or they do something which helps other students or in the local community they may be awarded a merit form. When an individual student accumulates 12 forms in a term parents are informed and at the end of the term those with the most merit forms meet with the College Principal Mrs Carter to be congratulated for their efforts. For the end of last year the following students made the top list (in order from top left):

Audrey Chin, Ogechi Eze, Ciel Zhao, Michelle Lai, Chris Sun, Dasha Lzubymova, Xiya Liu, Jillian Lam and Emma Jane Faulkner.

Good luck to them this season, we hope the current form continues!

Xmas Extravaganza

On the last Friday of term students and teachers performed in a "Xmas Extravaganza", it included singing carols and songs, playing the piano, poems and some dancing (from the teachers!). The event was compared by Mr John Bromilow and organised by Mrs Jude Coulthard it proved to be a great end of term activity. Well done to all those talented students who took part and to the teachers who ended with the song "All that Jazz" from the musical Chicago lead by Mrs Rhiannon George. We hope it got everybody into the Christmas spirit!

Children In Need

Friday 19th November students ran various events for the charity "Children in Need". The charity helps to improve the lives of disadvantaged children and young people. Our fundraising events included: selling a student magazine, selling Cup Cakes (made by the students), everyone wearing "spots" or they were fined, soak a teacher - where students paid to throw wet sponges at the teachers taking part and finally "find pudsey" a treasure hunt organised by students to try and find Pudsey Bear. It was another fun day and thanks to all those who helped and to all those who donated.

In total £450 was donated, making it a very worthwhile day!

Genes for Jeans

Jeans for Genes
Friday 1st October 2010 was "Jeans for Genes" day across the UK. Here at Bosworth, the event was solely organized by the student council and involved a "dress up / dress down" event. Students were asked to dress like teachers and then teachers were asked to come in jeans and dress like students. Both sides found it amusing to see people’s individual styles. A pound was donated by each person who took part and the student council raised £260. The "Genes for Jeans" charity raises money for children with genetic disorders which affects 1 in 25 children.

Well done to the Student Council for a well organised event.

Students take up mathematical challenge

Minh Trang Nguyen pictured with her Olympiad award – an exceptional achievement

Currently at Bosworth Independent College 174 of our 192 A Level students choose to study Maths at A Level, with many of these students also opting for A Level Further Maths. Last year, our students achieved a 100% pass rate at A Level in these subjects, with 73% of students gaining an A grade and a further 18% a B grade.

Therefore, it is fair to say Maths is a core subject at Bosworth, and because of the number of students we have studying this subject at A Level we are able to offer 16 different units out of a possible 18 available.

To incorporate this number of units we actually have 51 different A Level groups with an average of 8 students in each group. Which obviously means timetabling this subject in itself proves a mathematical challenge! However, having 18 maths teachers on hand helps.

The students can choose statistics, mechanics or decision maths to go alongside the compulsory pure maths units and with students from 22 different nationalities opting for maths each Bosworth student has a very unique learning experience.

Furthermore, this year we entered a number of students into the Maths Challenge competition which is set for AS Level students. Of those who participated; eight students achieved gold, thirteen silver and four bronze medals.

Three of our gold medal winners qualified to enter the first round of the Maths Olympiad and one of these students, Minh Trang Nguyen, won a place in round 2 of the Olympiad from which the National team is chosen. This is an exceptional achievement and we are eagerly awaiting her results.

Pat on the back for business

Here at Bosworth Independent College we recognise the time and effort involved in any local business investing in taking a student on work experience. Whilst studying the GCSE programme students are required to go on a two week work placement. Through the Connexions website they are able to search for local companies who take part in the scheme.

One example of a recent placement is Charlotte Brookes (pictured left) a current GCSE student at Bosworth Independent College, she chose to join, John Roan Photography. During her time Charlotte experienced, portrait sittings, show homes and a charity golf event. Charlotte is pictured here in a mock golf magazine front cover which all participants of the day took away as a souvenir. Charlotte found it fascinating to be behind the camera, "I didn’t realise how much work was involved setting up the lights and preparing for the shot to be taken. I now understand the time required for each shot."

The team praised Charlotte for being a pleasure to have around and someone who engaged well with the various projects.

Irfan Bhatti
(pictured right) another GCSE student at Bosworth Independent College, had a two week placement with a major electrical retailer. Irfan spent time ticketing, merchandising and selling products. The store staff described him as a natural salesman who was very industrious. Irfan really enjoyed his experience with this retailer, especially picking up selling tips from the team.

Alan Morton Course Director believes:

"Work experience for students of this age group provides a great insight into the world of work and the students certainly return with increased confidence".

Bosworth Independent College is home to approximately 320 students, 75% of these students are EU or International students that board with the College. For these students along with our UK students the opportunity to work for 2 weeks with a local business proves to be an invaluable experience.

Under 18 Table-Tennis Champ

Bosworth Independent College is very proud to announce that student Cavan Tian Vun Foo, from Malaysia, has just won the Northamptonshire County Table-Tennis (Single) Under 18 Championship 2010. Cavan joined our 18 month A Level programme in January 2010. He joined the local Table-Tennis club three months ago and currently trains with them two evenings a week.

For the Singles title, whilst Cavan was seeded number one, in the Final he had to fight off competition from the Two Time Defending Champion, a true challenge. With a 2-0 lead his opponent fought back to 2-2 but he finally clinched it 3 sets to 2 to take the Under 18 Single title.

Cavan also competed in the Under 18 Doubles title, seeded number two for the doubles his partnership managed to beat the number one seeded pair. With his partner Aaron Ark he managed to hold off the competition in 3 sets to 2.

Every week Cavan will also take part in a League match and currently he is ranked 21/500 in this League.

Well done Cavan on your superb achievement within your first 4 months at Bosworth! We wish you continued success with the Northamptonshire County Club.

Duke of Edinburgh Award

Bosworth student Krupesh presents a cheque to Romeo and Cinderella

This year the College is running for the first time the Duke of Edinburgh Award. This is open to all of our students and has three levels: Bronze, Silver and Gold. The participants choose to develop their skills in three areas: Skills, Physical Activity and Service. The awsard is a great way to pick up new experiences, friends and talents that will stay with them for life. This award is highly valued by both universities and employers, and can benefit students when submitting the UCAS applications.

Those on the scheme have been working with ‘Young Creations’ a voluntary organisation made up of able and disabled participants. The aim of the organisation is for young people to express themselves through the arts. Pictured above in this year’s Panto Performance! Bosworth student Krupesh presents a cheque to Romeo and Cinderella otherwise known as Jacob and Laura. Bosworth students raised the money through holding fundraising events.
