UCAS track will not be updated with final decisions from the universities until mid morning (UK time) – You will have to be patient!

A Level Results and Confirmation
Results
Exam results will be available at college from 9.00am on Thursday 20th August. We can give you your results over the phone but we cannot tell you anybody else’s results without their written permission. It is a busy time on the phones and so we ask you not to request breakdowns of individual marks until after 11 0’clock. It is only fair that all students can get through to us on the lines to confirm their final grades. Unlike at AS the individual marks do not matter – the only thing the university is interested in is the grade - they will not care about a high B or a low B. If you e mail a request to ec@bosworthcollege.com we will reply with details of marks as soon as we can usually by the end of the day. If would like a remark of any papers this will not be dealt with until Friday 21st August and you should phone then to discuss. The boards rarely make mistakes so don’t make plans around this!!

A level results are automatically sent to your chosen universities but IELTS results are NOT. You MUST inform your universities about your current IELTS score – They will not confirm your place until you have done so. This confirmation should take place as soon as you have identified CI and CF offers. You will have until August 31st to get the required IELTS result (but that leaves it VERY late to find somewhere else if you do not get the required grades so it is not recommended! If you are planning an IELTS test in the summer do it before mid July and get it booked NOW).

Confirmation
Your password from UCAS will give you access to your application on their web page. Universities will have already had your results for several days and should have made a decision about your application. If by any chance you have lost your password you should apply to UCAS NOW for a replacement.

If you have met the conditions of your CF offer then there is a legal agreement between you and the university i.e. they must make a place available to you on the course offered.

New for this year - If you have exceeded your CF offer you have 5 days to approach another university to see if they will take you. You will not jeopardize your place at your CF university by using this service. HOWEVER – it is very unlikely that top universities eg LSE, Imperial, Warwick, UCL will have any places available. Neither will there be places on this scheme for very competitive subjects eg medicine. This service is aimed at students who achieved A/B grades who were predicted C/D grades and not students who were predicted A’s and B’s in the first place.

If you have missed the offer grades the university may still accept you but they are not legally obliged to. If they reject you then your CI University will consider you. Again, if you have met the grades that they asked for then they must offer you a place. If you have missed by a few points they may still offer you a place. If the decision has not been updated to the web page then you can phone the Admissions Tutor of the university quoting your UCAS number. Do not phone if you have met the grades or if your place has been confirmed on the web page, as it blocks the telephone lines for others.

If either your CF or CI universities offer you a place you do not need to contact them. UCAS will write to you at Bosworth if you are an overseas student, or at home if you are local, this is your AS12 Form. This letter needs signing and returning within 7 days and therefore it is vital that overseas students have signed the form that gives me authority to do this for you. On the same form you should have filled in details of your courses so that I am crystal clear as to what you want!! Telling me verbally is not enough! After that the universities will contact you directly about accommodation etc. If you change your mind about accepting a place let me know immediately i.e. before I sign your AS12

Clearing
If you have not been accepted by your chosen universities then you are eligible for clearing. There are instructions about clearing attached. If you feel that there is a strong possibility that you will not achieve the grades for your offers it is worth doing some research before August. The UCAS website is a good place to start.

For overseas students, the correspondence for clearing from UCAS will come to College and it will be necessary for me to sign it on your behalf. It is your responsibility to keep me up to date with your wishes.

If you do not get the university of your choice it can be a very hectic few days trying to sort out the best way forward. Do not panic and accept the first offer made. Mr McQuin, Mrs Underwood or I will be in College from Monday 17th August onwards if you need help or advice. My e-mail address is ec@bosworthcollege.com Do not rely on emailing other teachers etc at this time. They will not necessarily pick up e mails on a daily or even weekly basis. They could even be on holiday.

Once you have everything sorted please confirm by e mail to me where you plan to study. We genuinely care and want to know where you are!

Mrs E Carter

You will need to use this service if both your CF and CI University have rejected you. If that is the case you will be one amongst about 40,000 other students who will use clearing to find a place at University.

Although you may be feeling an understandable sense of panic there is no need to; the clearing system is efficient and the people that operate it are experienced and friendly. Although it is new to you it is not new to UCAS, the Universities or your advisors and teachers back at Bosworth.

A list of universities with vacancies will be published on the UCAS web site (www.ucas.com) and this should be the place to start. Use the Internet to find out more about the courses/universities that you are interested in. Be realistic – If you have three grade C’s. Do not waste your time looking at places at LSE, Imperial etc.

If in doubt at any stage in this process contact College for advice. The college is manned with senior staff throughout this period and their main job is to help you.

UCAS will contact you with a clearing form (CEF) and a clearing number. You will need this number and your usual UCAS number when you communicate with admissions tutors.

You will then need to contact universities that you are interested in – either by phone or e-mail or fax. All contact details will be on the Internet. You have to do this in person not your parents or your teachers. Don’t accept a place at a university unless you are sure you want to do that course at that University. Spend time comparing the different courses for which you are eligible. There can be a tendency at this point to panic and take the first course offered to you. There will still be plenty of choice for most courses. If possible visit the University.

Once you have been offered a place that you wish to accept you need to send the University your CEF i.e. your clearing form. The University will fill in their part of the CEF form and send it to UCAS. UCAS will then send you the normal AS12 form confirming the offer. The AS12 needs to be completed and returned with in seven days.

This may sound a bit complicated but it is very logical as you progress through the system.

Mrs E Carter

Clearing - Overseas

You will need to use this service provided by UCAS if both your CF and CI University have rejected you. If that is the case you will be one amongst about 40,000 other students nearly all of which will find a course they wish to study at a British University.

Be realistic – If you have three grade C’s and an IELTS of 6.0 do not waste your time looking at place at LSE, Imperial etc.

At the same time UCAS will contact you with a clearing form (CEF) and a clearing number. This is the first, and probably the only, complication for an overseas student in that the form will come to college not to your home address. I will, however, have opened the letter for you and can easily e-mail you your number or simply tell you what it is over the phone. You will need this number and your usual UCAS number when you communicate with Admissions Tutors.

You can then contact universities that you are interested in – either by phone or e-mail or fax.

Once you have been offered a place that you wish to accept the University will need your CEF i.e. your Clearing Form that is at College. You then need to contact me with the details of your chosen course and I will fill in the form for you and send it off to the university. The university will fill in their part of the CEF form and send it to UCAS. UCAS will then send you the normal AS12 form confirming the offer and that needs completing and returning within 7 days. Again I will do this for you.

This may sound a bit complicated but it is very logical as you progress through the system. However remember the following:

If I am filling in CEF’s and AS12’s for you it is imperative that you keep me up to date with your wishes. E-mail is a wonderful thing.

If in doubt at any stage in this process contact college for advice. The college is manned with senior staff throughout this period and their main job is to help you.

Mrs E Carter
